The President of the French Republic Emmanuel MACRON announced on March 14, 2018 that France would bid to host WorldSkills Competition 2023:
“We will bid to host WorldSkills Competition 2023 and France will be the showcase of skills excellence and engagement, as displayed daily by Youth.”
The city of Lyon was then selected by WorldSkills France in Autumn 2018 based on different criteria, including technical, logistical, economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects.
Moreover Lyon already successfully hosted the WorldSkills Competition in 1995 and created a solid legacy to build the new project for 2023.
Late November, President MACRON reiterated his support to the WorldSkills France project by sending a formal letter to WorldSkills International (WSI) President Simon BARTLEY, along with the official expression of interest for the French bid.
On February 4 and 5, 2019, WSI took part in a series of technical meetings and site visits in order to validate Lyon's bid for WSC 2023. In addition to discovering the city and infrastructure WSI representatives met with political, economic, academic and cultural stakeholders of the Greater Lyon and even witnessed the legacy of WSC Lyon 1995!
